Is it me ,or is anyone else getting a bit bored with the Melbourne vs. Adelaide games at York Park ? Whist the game last Sunday was a reasonable enough contest and thankfully the rain held off, I kept getting a sense of deja vu throughtout the game.I believe that if this particular mid winter fixture (same teams, same time, etc..,) is continued, attendances at York Park will stay the same or decline. Therefore I am in full agreement with Melbourne Victory coach Ernie Merrick about him wanting to have a proper A-League game at York Park,  instead of continuing this meaningless pre season match. Ideally this proposed game would take place on a summer evening at York Park (preferably a Friday night with a 7-30 p.m. kick off ) with Melbourne playing against present lesser A-league sides (no disrespect intended) such as Wellington Pheonix, Perth Glory, or either of the 2 new A-League entrants. I'm sure it would make for a more livelier atmosphere ,and get a few more fans through the gates.Hey , who knows-maybe you'll get a decent number of Melbourne fans coming over to make a weekend of it, thus boosting the local economy. Anyone agree/disagree ?

I think a regular season match would be fantastic, but I don't think 7.30pm on a Friday is a good time - it makes it difficult for travelling fans, which in Tassie is important.

No doubt when we get our own team there will be a few non-optimally timed games, but while we only have 1 (or 2) a year, we need to schedule games to maximise attendances as much as possible - early afternoon games or Saturday night.

Part of the problem with such a small league is that even most competition games are "same old, same old".  Of course that will be rectified when they allocate licences 13 and 14 and include TUFC.

I agree with Chuq - 7:30 on a Friday would make it difficult for those of us travelling up from the south. Twilight game (say 5pm) on a Saturday evening would perhaps be better for the travelers, and a good "family friendly" time too.

But yes, a proper A-League game would definitely be awesome!!!

Well we simply have to take it as is at present. One way to up the momentum a bit would be to alternate this pre-season fixture between the north and south in alternate years. the whole thing seems a bit out of whack to me. Certainly I would like to see our own team playing a couple of friendly fixtures as a lead up to the season even if we dont get an accepted A League licence.

To be honest, I did expect more of a positive and more numerous feedback from this posting but thanks to those that bothered to reply. I still think that an occasional Friday evening game would bring the punters in , especially when in 2003 a mid week evening Rugby World Cup game between Romania and Namibia ( a football code not noted for its vast popularity in Tasmania ) drew over 10,000 fans in Launceston.Evening games are standard in the majority of football playing nations so be prepared for them when Tasmania joins the A-League; they really are enjoyable and atmospheric .I suggest for those who live a long distance away from the stadium  ( be it Hobart or Launceston ) either set out earlier , leave work earlier, or - that good old Aussie standby - take a sickie !

I don't have a problem with the travelling per se but I will not be travelling to every away game so I repeat my previous statement that I want some games near to my own city. As I have said the allocation of major games in Tasmania is out of whack regarding locations. That is why AFL will not go any further than where they are now for another decade, if not permanently, despite the hoo ha from the Mercury/Muckery/Mockery and many other misguided identities including the government spin - the figures do not stack up against the costs to operate at present.

I think when we are up and running the club will need to make sure that the north coast is included in pre-season somehow. A single pre-season match against another A-league side in Burnie one year then Devonport the next before back to Burnie the year after would be great.

We can't afford to have the north west coast become isolated completely. It has a surprising large portion of Tasmania's population and I have met a lot of people from other parts of Tasmania who were quite surprised to find how many people lived there. (not intentianal ignorance, they just honestly thought the n/w was about 3% of the whole.)

I guess when the club has been up and running for 25 years I would expect Burnie and Devonport to get 1/2 a game each year on average; with Devonport hosting a single match one year and Burnie hosting a single match the year after.

Note; I sai 25+ years of establishment, lots can happen in that time.

I think the NW should definitely be included as hosts for pre-season and youth league matches.

As mentioned the population is substantial, the Burnie-Devonport statistical division is something like 80k people.  Almost the same as Launceston.

Hobart is double Launceston's size, but the north is almost the same as the south - those extra people have to come from somewhere!

Fair comment for sure. No reason why a north western game should not be allocated from the the northern rostered allocation on a yearly basis. In fact the consortium may already have given tacit consideration to this with the proposal for one game more in the north rather than the south. I would like to see the whole arrangement proceed without AFL style interference so that over a maximum of two years a correct assessment can be made of the attendances and a logical reasoning made of any required alterations to the ratio of games allocated per region. By that time also a more definitive committment from the two southern local councils can be adjudged in relation to infrastructure developments.

Sorry Tazztell I wasn't being negative in regards to your preferences about the game development before. I do understand where you are coming from and yes I too would like to see such support grow and in fact it will have to for midweek games and so on as you say. My only comment is that I have seen Tassie botch a number of efforts to compete within interstate comps on an equal footing. Some of these haven't even eventuated after a fair bit of suggestion. So what this means to me is that as I said before the Mercury/Muckery/Mockery have to come on board for us to get the deserved state coverage. This probably will not happen until the AFL nonsense dies down and the trouble with that is they are promoting it. Let us hope that when the new Hawthorn deal is settled the TUFC consortium bid is still on track so a combined state impetus can go onwards and upwards. I would have thought that the very least they could be doing is to use their Sunday Tasmanian paper as a way of promoting the game of "soccer".
