I'm pretty disappointed with some of Walter's comments - he only seems to post negative things about TUFC - and even worse, the replies that he gets.

http://walterplessonsoccer.blogspot.com/2009/06/tassie-league-bid-in-balance.html

Check out some of the replies - I posted this one.

How much has the government put into the "failed" AFL bid? Didn't they even set up a project team at the Dept of Economic Development? Why wouldn't they fund $100k for this?

Being Tasmanians who support football, I would expect a better reponse than "what a joke", "sounds like another failed bid", "it was never an opportunity". Great attitude guys. If this is how the actual football fans treat it, what hope do we have? Only thing I will agree with is COMMUNICATION! The TUFC guys have kept pretty quiet about a lot of things, to the point of some mainland commentators not knowing about the bid. Of course when they leak something to get a bit of media coverage (ie the Sheik thing) they get bagged for that being a "publicty stunt" as well. Are people happy playing on paddocks in front of two men and a dog or do you think our state deserves more?

Do people get the impression there is a split between "old soccer" (FFT, clubs) and "new football" (TUFC) going on here?

I just posted a reply saying that if the feasibility study has shown up the need to prepare a full business case then the Government should sign the cheque immediately.  They promised they would continue funding the bid if the feasibility study was positive.

For me I am not totally convinced that this is not actually a misguided and poor attempt at concealing his connection with the the TUFC concept. But I do agree that there is a conflict here with "old" and "new" football development. Frankly it is typical of anywhere though when something new is proposed. It really is a shame that FFT cannot get behind the whole TUFC concept to garner FFA support, so we can develop complete pathways for the game here rather than looking with envy at other states. As we know there are a number of other high profile sports that are vying for the state govt support so we really cannot afford to have a fragmented approach from administrators of our game.

I have been wondering if we need to set up a Tasmania Football Supporters group so that fans get listened to by government not just FFT and TUFC.  I noticed that in response to Chuq's email the Minister said that they would discuss football issues with the relevant stake holders which I took as don't bother us about it because we will only talk to FFT and TUFC and in my view neither of these organisations represent football fans.

First off, hope you enjoyed the game Chuq, great result. Check out the news article on SBS site "The World Game" intitled "News Limited Bias", sorry not as savy as you I dont know how to post links. This might explain in a way why the Mercury is so "anti soccer", after all it's only a photo copy of multiple News Media publications.

In regard to the comments on Walter Pless's site, the majority of those comments are made by people who still call the world game "soccer", and have nothing better to do, so "they stir the pot". This is why need information regulary from the task force, to counter this type of crap.

Yes a supporters group would be a great idea, maybe even an independant website ?

Lets push for United.

Rugger - short for Rugby Football

Soccer - short for Association Football

Why do people get so uppity when it is called soccer? I call it soccer because we live in a country that has 4 major football codes! So, what's the problem?

It's not for anyone of us to assume the role of the late Johnny Warren,

however he did 'tell us so', and he called it FOOTBALL, good enough for me!

But without wishing to be too pedantic, what ever we call our beautiful game

lets all get behind the bid.

I'm not currently in Tassie, but any help via this site to establish a supporters

club just postit and I'll do what I can to help. A big turnout for the Victory/Reds

game  in Launceston would help surely ?

The soccer/football terminology is part of a bigger thing:

Soccer = Soccer Australia, Oceania, SBS, NSL, no World Cups "A game for shielas, wogs and poofters"

Football = FFA, Asia, Fox Sports, A-League, qualifying for World Cups "The world game, the beautiful game"

When I lived in Sydney if I was going to an NRL match I would say I was going to a League game, if I was going to a Rugby Union match I would say I was going to watch some Union, but If I said I was going to the Football my mates would know I was going to watch a round ball game.  If I said I was going to the footy most would think I was going to watch a League match.  Confusing?  The other games kick the ball to try to get it to their team mates hands.  In our game you mostly try to kick it to your team mates foot.  Hence football.  It has been called Football worldwide since 1863 so that is good enough for me.

The "Mockery" has never never had a near adequate sports coverage in general. That's why so many Hobartians buy the Herald-Sun. Its appalling lack of Football is a tribute to its 'head in the sand' approach to jounalism. It is only interested in local footy (AFL Tasmania) and that is something nobody outside of Tassie cares about.

I am one of many people who have adopted Tassie as my home. Having moved from NSW 12 years ago, i believe i'm as madly passionate about this place as any. Yet i'm always embarrassed to show mainlanders the Mercury, when they visit. As for Mr Pless, well i believe he is stuck in the age where Tasmanians believe they will never see the national stage and there are so many from his generation that will always have this defeatist mentality. However and thankfully, we live in a new era and have a progressive state government, whom i firmly believe will be behind this TUFC bid all the way. The Mercury will one day have to embrace the successful bid, once this team becomes a reality.

Football will continue to thrive as part of a national competition here, footy will always be begging the AFL for a look-in and will always be seen as second class citizens in a business market already under control. Have faith guys, our time is coming.

Actually, the term football has nothing to do with the act of kicking. It is used to describe the fact that the players are not on horseback, they are on their feet.

But, I agree, whatever you call it, it is the same sport and we all love it - if we didn't we wouldn't care if Tassie had a side or not! I call it Soccer, always will, it just irks me when people get precious about it. The 'you've gotta call it football' folk that write into newspapers etc, are actually doing the code more harm than good by acting that way.

Has anyone thanked John Safran for the success we've had in the past few years? The old story of the witch doctor curse on the Socceroos was always popular, so Safran got another witch doctor to lift it in about 2003 - and we haven't missed a World Cup since! :)

Perhaps it could be arranged for Safran to visit 'The Mercury' office ? !

The reason for FFA wanting the term "soocer" replaced by Football in Australia was that for too many years soccer was a sport based around ethnic lines which always led to riots and fights, bad publicity, soccer hooligans, flares, incompetent management and much more. This is why FFA wanted a new start, to get away from the stigma associated with the previous soccer regimes. No ethnic aligned clubs, no facsimle playing strips or club names etc, and to call the game by its world name Football.

Call it football or call it soccer, its a personal choice, but for me soccer has too many bad memories.

It is interesting that the term "soccer" wasn't created until 1889 after the organised game had been going for a couple of decades.  It was first used in England by some fans as part of the idea to clearly identify which football code was which.  It didn't gain much of a hold in England and wasn't adopted anywhere else except some of the "the colonies".

Yes a few positives from the typewriter player pless would be better thats for sure. Anyway the word possible could have been inserted to indicate the uncertainty rather than simply capitulate to an overseas expectation. I understand the go with FIFA and stadium play/train setups so yes it will be interesting to see how our governments and NGO's handle the nuances of developing something worthwhile instead of killing everything from tigers, devils and development in the rush to copulate with overseas ownerships handling everything - then again with a treasurer such as aird who has never been accountable for a thing in his entire political life what hope do we have of progressing forward. Too many people are gripped by the vista of something before them to the extent that they fail to see the vision presented.

Also yes I do get the feeling that the two "schools' of soccer in Tassie are somewht diametrically opposed.

Th 'old" school should step aside and in behind the TUFC 'new' school so we can move into the 21st century. Tassie is being denied equality of opportunity by persons who have been unable develop our game past part time social matches, apart from a few 'special event' games.

Did anyone see Milijas's 30 yard gunshot on the weekend? Wolves bought him for that strike. He scored 17 times last year and most were long range shots from the midfield. 30 yard strikes like that were his trademark goal and made him Serbian player of the year last year.

First time he plays all season in his natural spot (centre of midfield) and he comes up with shot that would beat any keeper in the world.

Hope Shwartzer is on his guard next year.
