DISCUSSIONS > Action needed! - Live venue in Hobart
Chuq Date posted Replies

Hi everyone,

The Green and Gold Army (http://www.ggarmy.com) has a register of official live venues (gathering places - pubs etc - that broadcast Socceroos matches, so likeminded supporters can gather and create a bit of football atmosphere!

As of yet there hasn't been a Hobart venue on the list, so I called the Casino to check what would be open for the next WC Qualifier (2am Sunday June 7).  They don't have anywhere that would screen sports events open past 2am anymore!

I called the Waggon, as I had previously attended some matches there (though at more reasonable times!) although didn't expect a positive result, since I knew they didn't open at that time.  I was told that no, they normally wouldn't be open - but if they got enough people calling up and asking, they would do it!

I passed the news onto the official GGArmy venue organiser, who will also contact them, but in the meantime - you know what you have to do!  Granted it is the middle of the night, but if you want to attend, please let the Waggon know!  (03) 6234 8888 is their number.  Just let them know that the demand is there :)

Of course please spread the cause to other groups/forums who may be interested!

Chuq, it's time for a supporters group to be formed in both Hobart & Lton, well before the World Cup starts, our last 3 Qualifiers are June 7, 10 & 17th, thankfully the last two are home games and will be shown primetime on Fox Sports with most venue's showing the games, the game on the 17th vs Japan should be an cracker of a game, at least supporters will have a chance to get to a venue to watch these home games without too much trouble, but as you say the game on the 7th should be the game that we qualify for the WC and a lot of people will miss it. Probably a bit late now to get a venue on board for the first game, maybe get it up and running for the last two, at least the WC will be shown live SBS so that's a start. I am lucky I have Austar and am looking forward to next Sat/Sun as Oz play Windies in the Twenty 20 WC, this game finishes and the Socceroo's play straight after, a long night in front of the screen.

Regarding a venue for a supporters club to meet and watch the WC 2010, what about the Aust Italian Club, with their passion for the game I think they may be receptive of the idea, especially after the good fun that was had last time when they stole a 1/4 final spot from us. Wont help for next week's game but could be a good place to meet. Anyway gotta go and get ready for the FA Cup.

Are there more live Fox venues in Hobart for A-League viewing?

I just had a most unpleasant experience at the Waggon-I had taken two of my boys (12 & 6) in from the 'burbs hoping to catch some A-league action on Fox (we don't have a box at home).

Only to be told rather rudely by the guy tending the bar that no, he would not change any of the screens over to Fox football, as "all the patrons wanted to watch cricket". I swear there were only 4 other blokes in the place! Moreover, the big screen near the ciggy machine at the Argyle St end was not being watched by anyone -which i duly pointed out, and asked him again if he could switch that one onto the football. But he wouldn't budge. So we left. Very disappointed, and not good enough Waggon!! If we can find anywhere else to go, you will have seen the last of us there -Waggon's loss, as there are 7 of us, all football mad, and we often bring along friends as well.

So -given that the Casino has given up showing football in a kid-friendly venue (only on now in the gambling den) - and some at the Waggon have developed a surly non-helpful attitude to football: does anyone out there know of anywhere else around Hobart where one can take the kids to watch a real game on a regular basis? -will be very important to us, come the WC finals, too. Anyone know of any publicans who are football supporters? -time to tell them of a huge hidden market, and get them to let all of us here know.

What about one of the social clubs around Hobart that are linked to the local football teams? I'm thinking the Greek club, the Polish club, Croatian club, etc. Not sure if any of them have Fox Sports subscriptions though...

Nice idea TUFC. Am not a member of any of these clubs (also being from the southern burbs, and they are all New Town-Gelenorchy way, no?)- so does anyone know whether they would be supportive?

Comparatively, I do know from past experience that the Croatian Club in Canberra is a pretty good spot for A League and Socceroos watching... although they have a lot of signed jerseys on the wall of that clown "3 Yellow" Simunic who must have played for Canberra Croatia at some point!

On a broader tangent: has the TU taskforce approached these clubs for general support of the bid? Surely the Italian club may have some links with our only Tassie socceroo, Dominic Longo, and would be sipportive?? or is that too much of an ethnic cliche? if so, apologies

Perhaps it would be an idea to contact some of the major sports bars around the city and ask if any of them want to be the "official" GGA venue for Hobart.  After TC_CVale's experience, I think the Waggon is definitely off the list.

The catch is - we want someone who is open for the late night games, or willing to make special allowances to do so.  We tried the Waggon for the 2am Aus v Qatar game, there were about 30 people there but they said they wouldn't be interested in doing it again.  Any prospective venue has to take into account that they will be publicity via GGA's mailing list for EVERY Socceroos match, whether it be 7pm or 2am.

I'd be hesitant to go to the Polish, Italian, etc. clubs - ideally we'd want a base that can be used for all future Socceroos matches - what about when Australia v Italy is on?  Or Australia plays a friendly the same time as Italy plays a friendly?

Other possibilities:

- Victoria Tavern

- Central Cafe & Bar

Incidentally for the Launcestonians - The TUFC guys are on very good terms with the Gunners Arms (you may remember from the pre-season pre-game meetup) management and are more or less the "official" TUFC venue in Launceston - they are very football friendly, show all the big games, and have stated their intent to show all the non-Launceston TUFC matches!

Do you know of anywhere it is on? Or do we have to fly to Invercargill to get a look at it? I suppose we could do Melbourne at a bar return for $100 plus expenses. Goodness me why dont one of the football clubs get things going here or do they want the general public to think they are simply soccering things around without any notion as to what promoting the game means?

I suspect the Waggon will be showing it as usual. Probably the casino as well...

Altrernatively, perhaps there is a member on here who has Austar at home and would be willing to be a "host" for us (we promise to be well behaved!!!)

Hi all. I went down to the Waggon for the NZ match - was pretty quiet, but a few die-hards were there. I'm probably going to be there again for the U.S. game - anybody else heading down? Or is there another venue people would prefer?

As luck (sort of) would have it, I'm going to be in Launceston this weekend.. in a hotel with Austar :)

I notice that Wrest Point has had a few adverts in the paper the last week promoting the fact they will be showing World Cup games. (Online version here - http://www.wrestpoint.com.au/default.asp?pID=52 )

Now would be a great time to confirm a Green & Gold Army venue, but it would be best to have a single venue in each city.  Ideally it would be one which would continue to support football after the World Cup (ie. Asian Cup, World Cup qualifers, A-League grand final ... and of course TUFC away games!)

Launceston is looking like the Gunners Arms, good work :)

Hobart now has a few options:

- Wrest Point

- Waggon (do you know if they'll be opening late for WC games)

- Prince of Wales

- Theatre Royal Hotel

Pros and cons of each?  I don't know when the GGA is sending out their "live venue" email but the WC starts in 7 days so it can't be far away!

I heard on the grapevine today that the Queens Head in North Hobart will be open for all Australia games during the World Cup...

I was in Launceston on Saturday night and went to check the channel that the match was on... couldn't find it.  Turns out it was on Fox Sports 3 and the hotel only had FS 1 & 2.  (Turns out, when I asked reception, I certainly wasn't the only person to ask about this that day!)

Never mind, I thought I'd wander to the Gunners Arms ...

To find that they weren't showing it.. because they only had free to air.

That's fine for the World Cup, but I was under the impression they were a "football pub" ... which, unless you only watch the UEFA Champions League or Bundesliga, is a bit hard to do without Austar or even Sentana.

I also was under the impression that they were to be TUFC's Launceston "live venue" .. I guess they have a bit of time to prepare but I wonder if they know the A-League is on Fox Sports!

Irish Murphys in Launceston are running tv ads promoting free breakfast and live telecast of major games.
