DISCUSSIONS > Web Poll - Club Nickname
admin Date posted Replies

After only a few days, the web poll for nicknames seems to be throwing up a few votes for "other." The list of options was derived after sifting through a few discussions on the forum, with one or two other suggestions thrown in. If you believe that other options are more suitable, perhaps you could nominate them here and we can either replace some existing less popular options and give others the chance to vote on them.

Indicently, a nickname derived from a club colour (eg "The Greens", "Reds" etc) is expected to become a more colloquial rather than official nickname, so these options are not listed.

My take on things - particularly the difference between the "official" and "unofficial" nickname - is that the nickname is just that, unofficial.  We aren't going to have an official name, an official nickname, and an unofficial nickname are we?

The point of a nickname is that it is just made up and spontaneous - they aren't decided by poll, vote or committee!

So long as the formal name of the club remains "Tasmania United FC" I'll be happy :)  I just think back to North Queensland FC - which had that title for so long, all through the bid process, and acceptance - and at the last minute they became "North Queensland Fury" - noooo!

The club name will be Tasmania United FC (barring an investor/owner coming onboard who wishes to take things in a different direction). The taskforce is also not a fan of incorporating a nickname into the official club name a la Fury/Glory/Jets/Roar, etc.

However it is not uncommon for a club to have an official nickname aside from the actual club name. Man Utd have an official nickname of the Red Devils, Everton the Toffees, etc. Obviously supporters invoke other more spontaneous nicknames (Reds, Blue Army, etc). Clubs can end up with a whole plethora of nicknames. We by no means need one, however given there had been a bit of discussion on the board over the issue, we decided to introduce a poll to see what people thought.

Polls are purely a bit of fun, although we can also use the feedback to potentially help in the decision making process nearer the time. Rest assured, we will let you know when a poll is presented that the taskforce is planning on using to help make decisions.

Oh and despite all that, "Green Devils" is my preferred one, but it has its share of people on here who can't stand it :P

As a lapsed Glory supporter now Tassie based, might I suggest what ever nick name, official, unofficial, what ever it is

something thats easy to chant?

Sure ' Americanised ' names Fury Glory Roar might be a bit non-traditional but words with 2 sylibues (SP sorry teach

should have payed more attetion) are easy to chant, so why not Tassie, Tassie, Tassie, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah not at all that

orgininal but 10,ooo + fans, suitably refreshed with a glass or 3, chanting that would do no harm!

I may be old fashioned but I think a "Tassie" chant should only be used for a true Tasmanian representative side not a franchise.

Whilst respecting your conservitism the rest of the world will see United as representing Tasmania, franchise or not. Let's not get too pedantic, lets get a team, lets stay 'UNITED' !

And how many United's are in the EPL, or the old NSL, or the Southern Premier League?

United has a specific meaning to Tasmania.  I'm not saying it doesn't to Adelaide or Gold Coast either, but Tasmania has a history of parochialism damaging sports teams, so it is important to TUFC.

Well the Tasmanian Tiger is just as frequently known as the Tasmanian Wolf.

In fact internationally it is more widely known as the Tasmanian Wolf.

So there is one possibility. Although that might not be possible what with one Wolves already in England.

Mind you we already have a 'sky blues' in multiple leagues.

I like Lions myself incorporating a more sleeker and shorter version of the Tasmanian Flag icon.

I don't think the fact that the Wolves are represented in England would be a factor - I dare say all possible names are in use somewhere! Let's not forget there are now 2 Newcastle Uniteds.

I do like the Wolves, it is unique to Australian popular sports (not in use in the AFL, NRL, A-league, NBL, Cricket etc) and it also reworks the tired cliche of Tasmanian sides being named Devils or Tigers.

The supporters group would congregate in The Den then.

Having had a while to think about this I have decided that I like TUFC Marsupial Wolves. With the Thylacine as a symbol. The thylacine is known internationally as a Marsupial Wolf. I think this would work well, and prevent Cricket Tasmania getting snotty.

Would also give the media something to work with as the team could be referred to by either Marsupials, Wovles or both. This is quite common in our code.

As for kit, how does brown and gold hoops sound - reminiscent of thylacine colours. I do like some of the other colours suggested on this forum though. I would encourage the club once established to not lock in away kits to one colour scheme but instead each year select colours for away kits that represent different aspects of Tasmania.

As I have said before I like the idea of Wolves. Chuck the term marsupial though its a bit too full on a bit like adding vertebrates or mammalian into something. Anyway does the wanderers have canine or whatever in their name? Everything else mentioned has a pretty good feel to it. I look forward to the happening. C'mon the Tassie Wolves.
