DISCUSSIONS > Crowd Passion vs MVFC -cheersquad anybody??
ndireen Date posted Replies

Hey -it was a great result by the youth team against the MVFC youth team yesterday: according to the team sheets, MVFC fielded three regular senior A-League players (Pantelidis, Ryall & Broxholm), and the latter is an Olyroo to boot, so it was a credit to our lads to beat them. But what is it with Tassie crowds? Such a lack of passion from those in the Cazaly, Miller, & Plaister stands! What a lack of colour and atmosphere! One could have mistaken much of the first half for a golf game ("bravo!", smattering of polite applause etc). Thanks to the drummers (mostly friends of young Amadu? :) and chanters who got things looking / sounding a bit more lively and like a real football match in the second half. C'mon Tassie! Show a bit of passion!!

How about a cheer squad to go along with the bid??

I realise we haven't even got a team yet, but what do people think about trying to come up with a name for the 'hardcore' supporters (sort of like 'The Fanatics' that you see supporting the Davis Cup tennis, and the 'Screaming Eagles' I think are one of the rugby league supporter groups)??

Thats a great idea stoogest. I actually thought the drummers were good, there were only about 5-10 of them but you could hear them all over the ground and really added to the atmosphere! Typically the supporters groups have also acted in a fan/club liaison type role. This would probably work well for TUFC considering their emphasis on integrating into the community. Check the Melbourne Victory forum for an example of what happens when fans and club do not communicate! Their supporters group generally were in the general admission area behind the goals, but the club (or venue) changed this to reserve member seating for 08-09.. which was a problem, as fans usually congregate (no reserved spot) and stand and sing all match!

Chuq , you are spot on and it was only one drum being shared around imagine more. The victory supporter are great to listen to and add great atmosphere to their games .

I agree that we need vocal support from the supporters. I enjoyed the second half of the youth team match after I moved from one end of the ground to be in front of the drummers. Being in that section among guys chanting had a different feel then the first half. Such a different feel that I began getting more vocal by occasionally shouting C'mon whenever Tassie looked to be in a position to score. I believe a vocal supporter base would be intimidating for opposing sides to face, some liken this kind of support to having a 12th man or so I'm told. Hopefully those drummers will come to Tasmania united matches to help with that. I can't say enough how much I enjoyed being near them for the second half especially when they started chanting ole and then to the same tune started chanting Tassie.

Stoogest - can we go past "The Tasmaniacs" as a name? :)

Lets look at what the other clubs have (note some refer to the group, some refer to the slang term for the part of the stadium they stand, which is why this list is bigger than the number of clubs!) - The Cove (Syd) - The Shed (Perth) - Red Army / The Gate (Adel) - Orange Army / The Den (Qld) - Blue and White Brigade / Northern Terrace (Melb) - Yellow Fever (Well) - The Squadron (Newc) - The Marinators (CC) You can see they fit into a few different naming patterns... based on these, some suggestions: - The Island - The Lair - Green Army - Green Gang I notice North Hobart Oval has a standing terraced area on it's western side, could we make this the "Western Terrace"? May be a bit far away from the park though.. the corner where the drummers were sitting would also be good! Bellerive - if the pitch infront of the southern stand comes to fruition, the hill would be a great spot - behind one of the goals. York Park - it would depend how the pitch was placed.

Chuq - interesting names there. Note that at least as far as Adelaide is concerned, there are two supporters groups: the official fan club is The Gate, where you have to be a paid up club member to join (but you also get special deals, photo ops with the players, access to trainings etc). The unofficial one, and by far the bigger group, is the Red Army (anyone can join -they just turn up behind the goals at match day at home games, or follow the noise at away games). Anyway, it will be interesting to see which of those kind of models evolves here -i prefer the latter, as it is less intimidating. I also wonder if once there are a few more suggestions for cheersquad names on this thread, whether we could convince admin to run an online poll for registered users to vote for a name? At the moment, I would favour a name that is "portable" between grounds, rather than location specific, unless the home ground issue gets solved before we are actually in the A-League.

Love it ndireen!! Haven't really thought about it much yet, but here goes... Regarding the location of the yet-to-be-named cheersquad, perhaps "The Pit"? And for the cheersquad, I agree it should be 'portable' if possible. Maybe: - "Tassie Ruckus" - "The Horde" (a bit WOW, but hey...) - "The Mad Mob"

Any discussion about A League support in Tassie needs to come from the foundation knowledge that AFL rules in Tassie and Rugby Union is its closest competitor. Whereas junior soccer shows huge potential, Tasmanians aren't exposed to much soccer culture and will eventially learn a lot from opposition away support at home matches. Link in to local knowledge for real success in creating a Tassie United Team

tassiemars, agree that AFL has most of the mindshare in Tassie, but rugby union? Are you serious? The situation is Tas is most similar to the Central Coast. The Central Coast is (was) a rugby league stronghold, had some teams playing games there, but no team of it's own - even though they desparately wanted one. In 2005, the Central Coast Mariners were set up, crowds averaged 8-9k in the first year but they have since reached two of the three grand finals, and get crowds as high as 19k when they are going well!

actually, tassiemars' comments echo a bit true - my bro-in-law plays union, travels the state with his team, too, i know he's had matches in hobart and burnie for eg. always thought it rather random, but maybe there's more union fans in tassie than anyone thought... anyways, supporters group names: the green devils the green hell (nodding to st etienne in france) the convicts/convicted/something like that the woodsmen, given tassie's forests everywhere i love some of the more interesting names, that nod not only to the team but a bit of history eg the shed in perth, the gate in adelaide. that's where i'm coming from with my suggestions, anyway.

I think some one mentioned it in another thread but the Axemen/forestry references can be pretty divisive. I like the 'ruckus' name, sounds like a good entertaining night, which is afterall the idea behind professional sport.

Has anyone else given any more thought to this? I thought of another name for the supporters area - "The Corner". Appropriate considering we will be in oval stadia for the time being and the corner is closest to the stands.

Well actually, I quite favoured your suggestion of "The Island"... suggesting a certain "rock" of support, of irregular form, sometimes small but often continent sized... Possibly surrounded by raging seas of opposition supporters, but not to be moved, regardless! Appropriate to any ground where we happened to turn up; and having the benefit of the players, either from TUFC or from the Youth team of being able to say in their (victorious) post-match press-conferences: "Yeah, we really lifted when we knew the whole Island was behind us...". But that's just me!!

Ah that sounds good, I wasn't sure what people thought of those ones, but yeah The Island was also one of my preferred names. Nice and simple. Where to from now? Wait for another Tassie representative team or Tassie U21 team match? :P Do we want to make "supporters" gear (banners, etc) in advance, which TUFC can use for PR photos?

In the Q& A with John He did mention TUFC hoping to drive the supporters club so maybe we need to get in touch with them and go from there. I quite like the Island as well . Maybe  the admin can help out here.

I'll repeat my 1 Dec post for Admin: can we please get an online poll going here with some of the names suggested in this thread? It doesn't have to be binding, but could give everyone a chance to click on a preferred option, or perhaps a default "None of these".

There is a new web poll available now. Unfortunately our software only allows for 5 options so many suggestions had to be omitted.  The wood/forestry suggestions maybe a little divisive, as had been observed, while any suggestions of green were omitted since the predominant colour has not yet been decided (subject of a future web poll perhaps).  At least you can see what may or may not be popular, in the meantime there is no reason this lively discussion can not continue to throw up some creative suggestions.

I don't think using the name of a corporate entity would help, stoogest. Isn't "Roaring 40's" the name of Hydro's wind power company? Besides, confusion with Qld Roar may ensue!

I was thinking that as well when I wrote it, but figured that the term 'Roaring 40s' had been around a lot longer than the Hydro company and hence could still be valid. (Perhaps they could be approached for sponsorship?!)

Hmm, it seems "The Diemens" are winning the poll on the front page... for some reason it just doesn't sound right to me.  The trend for other teams has generally been singular inanimate objects (ie. The Shed, The Den, The Cove).  Of course we don't have to copy .. but it just doesn't sound right.  That sounds like a pretty stupid reason but still :P

Second is "The Tasmaniacs" which is even worse :P

I suspect that some voters may have though the poll was for a team nickname rather than the supporter's group name.

To me the supporters group (animate) and the place that they cheer from (inanimate) should each have their own names. eg. "I'll be at the game. You'll find me down in the Cove going nuts with the Ruckus".

We could be called "The Convicts" and all congregate in "the shoe" or "the block" (as in solitary confinement).
