How do you respond to uneducated commentary such as this ... (sorry for blurriness, taken with camera phone!)

Although it could be said that responding to this letter is like the old "never argue with an idiot, they'll drag you down to their level" adage.. if no-one defends football then the Mercury will just think that everyone agrees with him.

I think if a few of us wrote brief replies it would be more likely that more than one would get published than if just one of us wrote a single long one.  Here is mine:

I'm not sure of the intention of John W. Hill's letter (June 9).  There are many sports that don't interest me - but for some reason I've never felt the need to inform the population of Hobart of this before every AFL Grand Final, Australian Open and PGA Tour?

I could go on, but I've leave it to others to respond from other angles!  Letters can be submitted here - http://www.themercury.com.au/opinion/letter-to-the-editor-submit.html

He can't help having that opinion. Hes an idiot.

When the AFL has their draft he is used to all teams at some point being competitive so he does not know how big an achievement it is for the likes of Nuneater Borough to beat Newcastle United in the FA Cup, or for a recently promoted team like Blackpool to hold the champions to a draw.

At the end of the day I just remind them that their 'Australian born' sport originated in England and point out that you can summarise an AFL match in a few simple words: "Boing, Boing, Pass, Kick, GOAL". Repeat that over an over again for four quarters and thats it. What a spectacle of futility.

Thanks for that, man I can't believe some people, but our sport is the beautiful game! I can't wait for the World Cup to begin.

Yes he is a rabbit I suppose but well in this instance he vented off some steam from himself which is much better than physical violence in the mall against an unprovoking suspect. Just as a small query can anyone verify that the oldest two football clubs in the world are AFL? Melbourne and Geelong to be precise. I am not intending to be inflammatory because all the oldest clubs I follow in a variety of sports started approx. 1880 - 1910.

Thats not quite true. Its a bit of a myth that the AFL likes to dangle in the media to get attention.

Australian rules has its origins in England and the former creator of Aussie Rules (I say former because the AFL has suddenly booted him out of tehir history books) used to play older forms of football in England and brought those rules to Australia.

Football of different codes has been played in England for centuries. Most loosely associated clubs would make arrangements with other clubs before playing games so that they were in agreement. These groups existed all through England and when a club/association/group who allowed hand on ball played another that did not it was not uncommon for them to switch rules at half time.

While the AFL historians take advantage of the existance of some AFL sides prior to the start of the football association in England they fail to acknowledge that a lot of the clubs that played in the association were playing other rules and 'house rules' long before hand.

Also - many clubs were amalgamations of others. My own club in England was a football AND cricket club in its early stages and had its birth as a school football side. So claims that the AFL sides are the oldest are not true.

According to Wikipedia:

Oldest Association Football Club (Soccer) Sheffield FC 1857 (and still playing)

Oldest Rugby Club (Union) Dublin Uni 1854

Oldest AFL Club (Wallyball !) Melbourne FC 1859

The biggest sporting event in the world just 5 hours from kick off, with billions watching games over the next month,
puts that last Saturday in September non event into perspective don't you think

GO THE SOCCEROOS !

Whichever code is the oldest is irrelevant. What counts in 2010 is which code is more popular and has spread the furthest. So let's see, Association Football is played in 204 countries, and AFL is played in...ummm...1?

Good to see people being passionate about our sports. Lets not be too derogatory about the differences between "wallyball" and "dribble ball" because whilst currently there is only one nation playing AFL the same can be said for a number of national sports around the world e.g. Gaelic football, American football, etc. Aussie rules was played in at least four other nations before the first World War and even today it is played on an amateur basis in approx. 5-10 countries. Anyway that is all beside the point because we need to take advantage of the current World Cup situation to advance the game here in Tassie. Furthermore it does not assist when the current (and soon to depart ) national coach derides the main sport in our nation for protecting its own ground interests. If soccer as a sport wants to reach the profile it sqwarks about it must wrench attention from the incumbents. That means money and public attention spread across the nation - not in spcialised locations as has been the case for 100years. Go the game.

I think for us the world cup is practically over.

Best attacking player red carded

minus four goal difference

Ghana wins their first match.

No way are we coasting through on four points now without a major win at some point to change our goal difference and I doubt we have the goals in us.

We need two wins to get through and if Ghana win one more game then I think that it is going to be a comfortable Germany and Ghana progression.

Could not believe the commentators tried to gloss over the match with a 'we did not need to win it'

Sure we didn't but a four nil destroys that argument.

Only hope we have is for Germany to smash both their next apponants.

Allemagne fourskins the potteroos. It would seem that we have played our world cup already. Not that we havent been given enough warning of the impending disaster over the last couple of years. The most recent result against USA was an indication of a negative coach unable to bring new ideas into a side. Overpaid and underachieving we have seen an oldish worn out and tired team worked to the bone in the conditions over there before other sides arrived for the sake of a dogmatic ideal from the current coach. He should leave now, his appointment was controversial in any case and now we need to release ourselves from this continuing "dutch style " mentality that exists. I ask you all - how many world cups have been won by the dutch? We used to have a free flowing attacking team displaying an exuberant enjoyment for their efforts and this coach has systematically stifled such skills.

Well might he say he accepts the blame. However some fault also must lay with the team including O'Neill who has no excuse this time for his stupidity against Italy before because there was no intention to win we had settled on a draw as our "dream result". If you are not attempting to win you become a target. As for Cahill some of these players are so dumb it is no wonder they dont get the coach's message - I mean it has been made perfectly clear in the previous matches that no such tackles will be tolerated. What the heck is wrong with putting running pressure upon an opponent to try and dispossess or bring upon a faulty pass? Even though it is the very negativity of the coach's style of play that has been responsible for the other team getting our players wrong footed and out off position it is no excuse to lay such stupid tackles. Its all over red rover but with a bit of guts and determination we might just might maybe with a bit of attacking mentality be able to put up a better show before we leave. If we cant they should all swim back home.

The worst bit is the red card.

4-0 or 1-0, it doesn't matter, it is still 3pts to Germany, 0pts to Australia - and that's what we were expecting.  it's also what happened against our strongest opponent in 2006 (Brazil) and we qualified from there fine.

So long as Pim recognises the formation issues and fixes them, we still have a good chance.
