DISCUSSIONS > Australia World Cup 2018/2022 - bid book
Chuq Date posted Replies

This is being distributed to FIFA Delegates in South Africa this week:

http://www.australia2018-2022.com.au/bid-book/index.html

I notice a few references (very minor, but should stand out to any parochial Tasmanian!):

p15: both Hobart and Launceston marked on the map (but then so is Alice Springs ..)

p16: Wineglass Bay?

p19: Appears to be Hobart's Hunter St at the top?

It's nice they are thinking of us, even if we aren't included in the list of host cities...

Tasmania's involvement in a World Cup will only occur if the current state government is out (not having ago you Labor lads - they are just against the Cup having an impact on their little egg 'afl in Hobart/Launceston) AND we miss out on both current bids to non-Asian nations AND a future Federal Government (of whatever party) is prepared to bid for 2026 AND we have an A-League side running with an investor who is wealthy enough to put funds forward for a portion of the stadium costs.

Yes it is frustrating to watch the lack of committment by short sighted "leaders". The opportunity such as this only comes along once in a lifetime for small locations such as Tassie. We have a chance to showcase our industry and produce during this world event and yet they still horse and cart era mentality to approach such issues. All is not totally lost because if/when the cup comes to OZ Lonnie should be able to get several AFL games and maybe also host the training location for the team that is playing its match in Hobart. This can happen IF and that is an IF our collective local and state authorities understand the potential. Forget right now any notion of super stadiums York Park or Bellerive because none of those fit the criteria without massive infrastructure additions. The only one that can satisfy will be North Hobart and that too needs some miilions to bring it up to scratch. It can be done and done so "on the cheap" compared to the impact the other grounds will have surrounding them and servicing their grandiose development debts because permanent crowds that size will not occur on a regular basis. North Hobart is in the capital city near the International Airport with surrounding facilities and transportation and with sufficient spectator window dressing and suitable player and officials upgrades it can suffice and look good to the world.

Galactica you make an excellent point about the AFL matches.

The fact is - the state is counting on hosting AFL matches while the cup is on in both Hobart and Launceston in order to advertise the states potential to host an AFL team. (Assuming we don't have one at that time - which I don't think we will).

The problem is that the hosting of AFL matches is considered a higher priority than hosting teams practicing for the world cup. (And if teams practiced at either Aurora or Bellerive they would be near-capacity each day with supporters.

FIFA has strict regulations governing such facilities including exclusive occupation before and after the cup for set periods of time. For this reason each stadium would be either AFL matches or World Cup Training. Not both.

So unless they put AFL in one stadium and Training in the other, which I have been told they are not keen on, then there will be no training of national squads in Tasmania unless another stadium is upgraded.

Will be interesting to see what comes of this over the next few years.

According to the website 442 three new stadiums will be built if Oz is to hold the WC, Perth, Canberra and in the west of Sydney (should make a few happy). Once again poor little Tassie misses out again as they are going to play games in ten (10) host cities.

The ten host cities are Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Gold Coast, Canberra, Newcastle, Geelong and Townsville.

So as is always the case we are left out, if they are building new stadiums in the west of Sydney and Canberra you can kiss goodbye any chance we have of getting a side in the A League before those two area's. As for Geelong & Townsville getting a gig before the second oldest State in the Commenwealth what a joke. Just shows you what FFA think about Tassie and our youth, so much for being a bid for the whole nation.

Sydney Rovers already has a licence and will come in next season. Canberra has been promised the next licence if it can get its finances right so this isn't really a surprise.

The issue we need to hang our hat on is that by the 2013 Asian Champions League the A-League will be required to have a 34 game home and away season. 12 teams x 3 games = 33 games a season each which is 1 short of the AFC's requirements. The AFC will probably compromise on that for a while but a 14 team competition would provide 39 games each a season with 3 rounds. This would open up 1 spot on top of Canberra for us to aim at.  The best way for a 34 game home and away season to be achieved would be an 18 team competition with 2 rounds. That would open up another 5 spots on top of Canberra for us to aim at.

Yes what you say has great logic and is probably our admission sequence now as an allocation place. Unfortunately we are simply stagnating, jumping up and down in the one spot over the next 5years. As I have said elsewhere unless we are in the A League before the AFL we will lose another ten years after that trying to make up ground and develop a supporter base from a small beginning - it is imperative that we get in a get hold of a generation of young supporters on board to give momentum to our games for two or three years. I am afraid to say it but unless significant impetus comes soon from FFT and local government the boat will have sailed. I am not pleased with the outlook at this stage and really feel that a lot of energy has wasted away in our bid. We seem to be losing momentum and if nothing eventuates before 2013 I believe even if we come into the A League after that we will not have much impact or success and perhaps even be in danger of dropping out fairly quickly - even before the World Cup gets to OZ Land. This is the reason why people are always reluctant to bring Tassie into national leagues.

It is my personal opinion that a certain city mayor who falls off his bike is probably the recalcitrant one who is holding up Tassie progress on the matter of getting an A League team and pushing our state chances for a host city match during the World Cup. Him and his cafeinated and kaftanned colleagues with exclusion of at most two business operatives with expertise in such matters do seem to be overcome with a blight of tree hugging bike riding economic disaster nonsense. Talk about Nero fiddling while Rome was burning. They were elected to get the capital moving and should be giving examples to the rest of Tassie as to overcoming downturns but well what do you expect when they seem to think that a Myer hole in the ground is a tourist attraction never mind the fact that no one is wanting to go into their city so much so that there is a perpetual traffic jam of sorts surrounding the whole place as everbody trys to bypass it and go into the dormitary cities. If they do ever wake up they might just might realise the demographics of using stadium upgrades to interlink with and justify the economics of the accepted requirement for  transport infrastructure as is currently urgently needed around greater Hobart.

Sorry to bump such an old thread!

The FIFA Executive Report of each bid has been made available:

http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/bidders/organisation/documents/index.html

Australia's is here:

http://www.fifa.com/mm/document/tournament/competition/01/33/74/50/b3ause.pdf

And Tasmania is mentioned;

p8 "Hosting concept"

"Two additional FIFA Fan FestTM venues are proposed in Darwin (Northern Territory) and Hobart (Tasmania) to ensure that the FIFA World CupTM would be a national event."

Very brief but it's just another slither of information that people here may be interested in!

11 days and counting!

Sort of makes you wonder about our tourism twits and how they cannot see past a wine and food show or kids campouts on Maria Is type of stuff. I know there are some established events but really the biggest show in the world is soccer and somehow they just dont get it. The opportunity only comes knocking once.
