The first regular season A-League match played in a neutral location was played tonight - Central Coast v Perth was played at Canberra Stadium. Crowd was ..... 5193! Surely either Hobart or Launceston could have done better! Add comments |

galacticaposted at 7:37AM on 7th Sep, 2009 As I understand it the lighting will be in operation before December according to the last media statement. Installation is underway currently. Joshposted at 7:34AM on 8th Sep, 2009 I was in Canberra Friday night and the Weekend as the Mountain Bike World Champs were being held there (an event that was expected to draw 40,000 over the course of the event - and attract a worldwide audience of over 30million)... Friday night featured the 4-Cross... Thats why no-one went to the footy... let them off the hook... :)
ntguyposted at 12:43PM on 8th Sep, 2009 Seems that someone at the Mariners didn't do their homework when they selected Canberra for the game. Foxhawkposted at 1:06AM on 9th Sep, 2009 Not sure we would have got much different for a weekday game to be honest. A lot of people from Hobart and the NW would not go. Some people in Launceston who would normally go on a Saturday would also not go. I think we would be lucky to get 6. Yes we get great numbers for pre-season matches, but they are our once a year game at the moment. Regular attendance when the excitement has past is a different thing. Just the same I think our Saturday matches will have a good attendance. benoncehobbledposted at 5:08AM on 9th Sep, 2009 I was at the game Friday night and commented at the time that some Tassie fans would seize on the crowd figure to leverage some support for their bid. (Don't worry I support both bids.) There were a range of factors involved such as the Friday night (no travelling fans), no local team playing, the mountain bike world champs, it was freezing (I was wearing 5 upper-body layers!) and a distinct lack of hype or advertising about the fixture. Despite these excuses, it was a very disappointing turn-out that only confirmed to FFA that Canberra are not yet ready to enter the league. Perhaps Tassie and Canbbera will enter the league at the same time a few years down the track? Clintposted at 4:16PM on 9th Sep, 2009 Personally I think the FFA are very misguided if they decide not to issue Canberra a license based on Friday night's crowd. I think 5,000 for a Central Coast vs. Perth fixture isn't actually too bad with so little advertising (from what I have read around the internet). I am increasingly getting the feeling that the FFA simply does not want a team in Canberra at the moment, especially with the talk coming out of the FFA of an 11 team league being feasible. ntguyposted at 12:18AM on 10th Sep, 2009 I think the FFA is looking for another solid drawing club that gives the League a more secure base. I believe it made a mistake bringing both GCU and NQF in at the same time. Both clubs were territorial expansion rather than support expansion franchises. Melbourne #2 should have come in with say GCU and then Sydney #2 could have come on board with NQF. My view on Canberra is that while ever Capital Football is threatening spectator boycotts instead of helping the bidders to address the financial issues that FFA are concerned with they won't be included. None of the bidders for licences #13 and #14 fit my definition of support expansion franchises they are all territorial expansion franchises so ensuring they are financially viable is the highest priority. |

I have no doubt that we could have done better up here in Lonnie. It might have been a bit dark at Bellerive though. When is the lighting due to go in?
